This was actually more closely related to an fdc driver bug discussed in the "5.3-BETA5-i386-disc1 bootstrap failures" thread: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-current/2004-September/038602.html Guess I missed that thread. hint.fd.0.disabled=1 is an acceptable workaround to me, at least for now.
