I changed CPUTYPE?=pentium-m to CPUTYPE=pentium-m, then did:

# cd /usr/src/sys/boot/i386 && make && make install

I then rebooted and it worked fine.

Should I try using the FreeBSD MBR?

Do I need to perform additional steps to properly install a new version of
the loader?
