Thank you very much for this helpful information, It was not necessary to clean /compat/linux when updating linux_base-f8 alone. But it is recommended while updating from linux fc4 infrastructure ports to linux -f8- infrastructure ports (i.e. while adding OVERRIDE_LINUX_NONBASE_PORTS variable to /etc/make.conf).
