My system hangs appear to be ACPI related.  When I disabled passive 
cooling (and reduced my frequency to prevent overheating), the system 
was stable.  I've since read the handbook about ACPI and added the 
mentioned hint to disable APIC (though I don't even have apic in the 
kernel?).  Hopefully that fixes these mysterious hangs.  The panic I saw 
may have just been a coincidence.
