I think you know very well why we haven't removed that, and other
pieces of software with the GPL from the tree: no one has written and
submitted suitable replacements with more permissive licenses.  (Of course
you could, if it really bothers you.) It may offend your sensibility, but
have you really been prevented from doing something by the GPL?
