thanks for this hint. After "kldload acpi_video" devinfo -v shows the 
following (truncated):

Assuming the patch cannot help me, do you have an idea what I could 
check next?
I can control the brightness with
     acpi_call -p '\VBRU'
     acpi_call -p '\VBRD'
