OK I created a new machine, almost with defaults (changed the disk to IDE and independent-nonpersistent, put the CDROM on the same controller) on 6.5.0 with Compatibility set to ESXi 5.0 and later (VM version 8) and the installer booted OK, got to the welcome screen.
