Hardware acceleration lost (?) following pkg upgrade

For me, all recent attempts to upgrade lead to plasmashell using 
excessive CPU and frequently crashing.

Discussion in IRC led to an observation that I'm apparently without 
hardware acceleration after these upgrades. For example (GL_RENDERER   = 
Software Rasterizer):
