Maybe Eric knows better, but that's off my recolection with ATI experience. Requiring the DRI head, that or you can install the drivers from the linux distro, and just not the kernel driver for obvious reasons. I have been known from time to time to use the ATI linux modules in FreeBSD, works quite well actually. Just a thought for you to try.
