Thanks for responding.

No, ad0 does not appear in dmesg.  

ad0 is a Winchester and ad2 is a Seagate drive (I don't know if that makes a 
difference, but there it is).  ad2 is the 8Gig drive and ad0 is the 30 gig 
drive.

Just FYI:  There *is* a third device, ad3 (also a Seagate), which is 
identified by both -STABLE and -CURRENT.  But I don't use the drive and have 
just been too lazy to remove it.

When I boot on ad0 (4.10-STABLE), I get the following messages relative to 
disk devices in /var/log/messages:
