replying to myself, I know.  After some good research, I tried the
following:

- removing SMP from kernel config           .. no effect
- adding NO_MIXED_MODE to kernel config     .. caused my HDD not to mount 
  on bootup.
- removing 'device apic' from kernel config .. success!

Of course, this is an SMP capable board, I'd have to use ps/2 if I added a 
second processor.
